Opening a school during a global pandemic

We have successfully opened the school, however things look a little different than we imagined due to COVID. See how the Dominican children are learning in their new school and how you can support.

Opening a school during a global pandemic

Classes were set to begin in the new school on September 7th but due to the pandemic, the Minister of Education postponed the start date to November.

Although some private schools chose to open the school in September 2020, Pastor Gabriel Dalusma, who runs the school, timed the opening with the local Public schools. The additional two months were used to prepare the teachers with training courses and familiarize them with the programs provided from the Secretary of Education as all classes are to be taught virtually. There are five teachers who have been trained and three who are currently employeed.

School is looking a little bit different than originally planned but they have developed a strong virtual class plan. We use Zoom for live teaching and guidance, WhatsApp for sending and receiving homework and tasks, and Classroom for delivering online exams.

We delivered notebooks and homework is schedule with corrections returned twice a week.

Teachers are available in the school’s classrooms during class hours to help parents with any questions about what their children are learning.

On Mondays and Thursdays, there are eight students per classroom for two hours. Students are socially distanced and carefully follow all health and safety precautions.

Although everyone has been trained, the students are eager to learn and we have been able to successfully launch the school in the midst of a pandemic, it has not been without challenges.

We have experienced attempted theft at the school and have needed to redirect funds towards camera surveillance.

We have also had hydro issues and have needed to correct this by installing an inverter which has financially impacted the school.

We are hoping to provide weekend courses for teenage students who are eager to learn math and English. This will only be made possible by the generous support of our donors.

With the new COVID restrictions, we will need additional funding to support summer school for the children who were not accommodated with the new restrictions.

The new limitations mean that there is additional pressure to build our second storey of the building so that we can accommodate more students in class. This will be able to be completed as we are permitted, have funding and support to help the build.

The successful opening of the Abundant Life School would not be made possible without donations from people like you. The pandemic has been something that everyone has needed to adapt to but doing it through poverty is especially challenging. We are so grateful for your donations – all of the funds go directly to support the betterment of the lives of Dominican children.

For $400US, the Abundant Life Charity can provide the families of the Batay with meals for 2-3 days. For some, these  are the only meals they are able to eat in a week. Our goal is to help these families do more than just survive.
